Privacy Policy
Effective September 26, 2026
This policy explains what the Voltage iPhone app and its website (together, “Voltage”) collect, why, who it is shared with, and how you control it. Voltage is made by Nicolas Rios (“we”, “us”). If you have a question, email skaterdude5321@gmail.com.
- No ads, no ad tracking, and we never sell or rent your data.
- You can use Voltage without an account. Most of what you enter stays on your iPhone.
- To find chargers, your coordinates are sent to Open Charge Map. Routes are built with Apple Maps.
- Ask Volty and the car-screen reader run on your iPhone. Your questions and photos are not sent to us.
- If you sign in or connect a car, we store only what that feature needs, and you can delete it in the app at any time.
1. What we collect and why
Location
With your permission, Voltage uses your iPhone's location to show chargers near you, how far each one is, and to plan routes from where you are. If you start a trip and allow “Always” location, Voltage keeps updating the trip on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island while you drive. The last map position you viewed is saved on your iPhone so the map opens where you left it. We do not store your location on our servers, except the car location described under TeslaFi if you connect it.
Charger lookups
Charger information comes from Open Charge Map, an open community database. To fetch the chargers around you or along a route, Voltage sends the relevant coordinates (and search filters) to Open Charge Map. That request is not tied to your name or account. Open Charge Map's handling of it is covered by its privacy policy.
Maps and routes
Maps, Look Around, place search and driving directions are provided by Apple Maps. Apple receives the places and routes you ask for, under Apple's privacy policy.
Your EV profile
During setup you tell Voltage your first name if you'd like Volty to use it, which car you drive, and what you care about (for example your plug type, battery size, charging speed and whether you prefer fast, cheap or reliable chargers). This is saved on your iPhone and is used to calculate each ChargerScore. If you sign in, a copy is saved to your account so you don't have to set up again on a new phone.
Ask Volty and the car-screen reader
Ask Volty uses Apple's on-device language model. Your questions, Volty's answers and the charger facts it looks at are processed on your iPhone and are not sent to us or to any AI provider. If you photograph a message on your car's screen, the text is read on your iPhone with Apple's Vision framework; the photo is not uploaded and is not saved by Voltage.
Account (optional)
You can use Voltage without an account. If you choose to sign in with Apple, we receive an identifier from Apple and, if you share them, your email address (which may be an Apple private relay address) and name. We store these, the date you created your account and last signed in, your EV profile, and sign-in session records so the app stays signed in.
Tesla connection (optional)
If you sign in with Tesla, you log in on Tesla's own page; we never see your Tesla password. Voltage asks only for read-only access. The access tokens Tesla issues are stored in your iPhone's Keychain; our server helps exchange the sign-in code for those tokens but does not keep them. Readings Voltage fetches from your car (such as battery level, range, charging state and recent alerts) are kept on your iPhone for up to 7 days to show trends. Voltage does not wake your car to fetch data.
TeslaFi connection (optional)
If you connect TeslaFi, you give us your TeslaFi API token. We store it encrypted on our server and use it only to read your car's latest state from TeslaFi about every 15 minutes, because TeslaFi provides only the current state and not history. Each reading can include: battery level and range, charging details (state, power, voltage, current, energy added, charger type, cable, time to full), charge limit, odometer, inside and outside temperature, climate and preconditioning status, tire pressures, lock and Sentry Mode status, whether someone is in the car, speed and power, software version, drive and charge counters, the car's name, and the car's location. These readings are stored with your account so Voltage can show history and trends.
Purchases
Voltage Pro is sold through the App Store. Apple processes the payment; we never receive your card or billing details. The app checks your purchase with Apple to know whether Pro is unlocked.
Paywall service
Voltage uses Superwall to manage its subscription settings. The Superwall software in the app receives technical information such as an anonymous app-generated identifier, device model, OS version, language, app version and whether you have Pro, plus events such as the app opening and paywalls being shown. This is not linked to your name, email or account. See Superwall's privacy policy.
Support emails
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use it only to reply.
Crash reports
If you have turned on sharing with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports and diagnostics. We use them only to fix bugs.
2. What stays on your iPhone
Unless you sign in or connect a car, Voltage has no server-side record of you. Your EV profile (including the name you give Volty), your last map position, Tesla readings, Ask Volty chats and your settings live on your iPhone. Deleting the app deletes them.
3. Who we share it with
We share data only with the service providers needed to run the features you use:
| Provider | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open Charge Map | Coordinates and filters for charger lookups | Charger data |
| Apple | Map, search and route requests; Sign in with Apple; purchases | Maps, sign-in, payments |
| Cloudflare | Account, profile and TeslaFi data we store | Hosts our server and database |
| Tesla | Your sign-in and read-only data requests | Tesla connection (if used) |
| TeslaFi | Requests made with your TeslaFi token | TeslaFi connection (if used) |
| Superwall | Anonymous device and app events | Subscription settings |
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights or safety of users or others, or as part of a sale or reorganization of Voltage, in which case this policy would continue to apply to your data.
4. What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't “share” it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- We don't show ads and don't use advertising identifiers or third-party ad trackers.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't send your Ask Volty chats or car-screen photos anywhere.
- We don't control your car; Tesla access is read-only.
5. How long we keep it
- Account and EV profile: until you delete your account.
- Sign-in sessions: they expire after at most 60 days and are removed when you sign out.
- TeslaFi token and readings: until you disconnect TeslaFi or delete your account.
- Tesla readings: on your iPhone, up to 7 days.
- Support emails: as long as needed to help you, then deleted.
Encrypted backups kept by our hosting provider may take up to 30 days to cycle out after deletion.
6. Your choices and rights
- Location: change or turn off location access any time in iOS Settings › Voltage › Location. You can still browse the map.
- Camera: used only when you choose to photograph your car's screen; you can turn it off in iOS Settings.
- Disconnect a car: in Voltage, go to Settings › Your car and disconnect Tesla or TeslaFi. Disconnecting TeslaFi deletes your token and all stored readings.
- Delete your account: in Voltage, go to Settings › Account › Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, profile, sessions, TeslaFi token and readings. You can also email us and we'll do it for you. See how to delete your account.
- Access, correction and portability: email us to get a copy of the data we hold about you or to correct it.
Depending on where you live (for example California, Virginia, Colorado, the EU, UK or Canada), you may have rights to know, access, correct, delete or port your personal information, to object to or restrict processing, and to not be discriminated against for using these rights. We honor these requests for everyone, wherever you live. Email skaterdude5321@gmail.com; we'll respond within 30 days and may ask you to confirm the request comes from you (for example, from the email tied to your account). You may appeal a decision by replying to our response, and you can complain to your local data protection authority.
For EU and UK users: we process data to provide the service you ask for (contract), for our legitimate interests in running and securing Voltage, and with your consent where required (such as location and connecting a car). You can withdraw consent at any time.
7. Security
Traffic between the app and our server is encrypted (HTTPS). Sign-in and Tesla tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain. TeslaFi tokens are encrypted (AES-GCM) before they are stored, and only session token hashes are kept on our server. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we store to the minimum needed.
8. Children
Voltage is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
9. International users
We operate from the United States, and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for those transfers.
10. Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell you in the app. Questions or requests: skaterdude5321@gmail.com.
